Turning moms and dads into husbands and wives one household at a time...

The Good and Bad of Being A Baby Mama

Growing up in a single family home is challenging for both parents and children. When one parent has to do all of the work, each day can be exhausting.

While society often focuses on the negatives of single motherhood, there are positive points to consider as well, that may outweigh marrying the wrong person. If your baby’s daddy is not in the picture, you may want to look on the bright side. When you are a single mother, you can raise your baby as you see fit, without conflicting opinions from your ex. You can live where you choose and plan your future accordingly.

That’s not to say that a parent should plan to raise their child in single parent households. Although some individuals actually set out to do just that, most people dream of raising their children in a two-parent household with two loving parents instead of just one.

Imagine yourself trapped in a loveless marriage with no way out. Simply being part of a couple isn’t necessarily the answer. If you are raising your baby on your own, you have the perfect opportunity to find the right person to share the rest of your life with you and your baby. You can still have the family you dream of.  You do not have to settle for life with your baby’s daddy simply because he is the daddy.

When you are a single mother, you can devote more of your attention to your baby and take your time meeting the right person. You can concentrate on spending your free time doing activities with your child and bonding with him or her.

African American couples face the same challenges as other couples face. Many African American couples have been raised in poverty themselves and find it difficult, if not impossible, to break the cycle. Since the majority of black babies are born outside of marriage, there may be some concern that the family is dwindling.

There is nothing better than sharing the joys, along with the responsibilities of parenthood. Just having someone to back you up will help you to be a stronger parent. Knowing that your child is with your partner when he or she is not with you gives you a feeling of security. While raising a baby on your own isn’t the end of the world, marrying your baby’s daddy and giving your child a secure and stable home will make life easier on all of you.
